In the end he accepts the dictums of the universe, as we all must do, and brings us back to the reality of mundane life, richer for the experience and grateful for the transitory nature of our purely observational involvement. He has created a wonderful tribute of love we are fortunate to share.

If only I could give this book more than five stars. Since I am not a stranger to the topic of cancer and other terminal illnesses, the pain one patient goes through and the havoc it creates in the lives of ones dearest to the dying, I can attest to the realism and truth portrayed by the poet in every page-- everything expressed so poignantly, so honestly and bravely. Oddly enough, it gave me a sense of hope at the end. Despite the darkest days which seemed to find no end, there was a celebration and a deep sense of gratitude sandwiched between emotions which had yet to e named. I found this book almost by accident, but what a treasure!Product details

It isn't easy to say a book of poetry is phenomenal when the subject is about the death of a loved one... But this book is just that... Phenomenal.
It cuts you with the pain and you live the emotions like you've lost that person.
"saying goodbye to rue," - but can one say goodbye to someone they loved for so long? That they were so intertwined with?
These poems strip you of your feelings and add in the ones they want you to feel. Poem after poem, they tell a story of love and suffering. Of traumatic issues and decisions.
The book is powerful and haunting. The poems are short and they are hammered into your mind. Each poem is like another step, another day and your hurtled into the unknowing of when... When will the last day be? What will the last poem be?
The book ends with the killing of chickens... And foreshadowing of the soon events of rues death. Of the death of love. And closing the book, out comes a breathe. Could you take anymore yourself and you can only imagine, with what you've just experienced... How the poet stood and never crumbled. These poems stood from him and guided him into the healing...
This book is alive. A book that stretches itself. The tears cried from my eyes sometimes made it hard to read but the words, I will never forget.

I found "Saying Goodbye to Rue" to be eloquent, well woven, emotive from a man I respect, a Poet and friend who lost his beloved due to cancer. Anyone who has lost a loved one to any dis-ease can relate to this book. I, myself, feel comforted in my own loss by reading and absorbing James C. Allen's Poetry. I know I will read it over and over again.

In this exquisite, eloquent labor of love, poet and friend James Allen unflinchingly chronicles in verse the events leading up to and subsequent to the death of his life partner Rue. Jim's straightforward, no-holds-barred writing is deeply heart-touching and wise. One can feel the progression of the many stages of grief and mourning; yet his verse never once wallows in self-pity. He tells it as it really is, and opens a portal of greater understanding of the dynamics of such terrible loss. There will be tears reading this beautiful body of work; but from tears comes the promise of healing.
This book was written by a friend and ,it created a 3d view of the situation for me having known both Jim and Rue , I could hear both of them not only in the poems but between the lines and out of the margins . Though i cannot relate to everything there is common ground in terms of suddenly being pushed and kept out of old comfort zones in terms of rising to an occasion of crisis .
James Allen has penned a compelling read. His poems deal with the feelings and sights of the journey of his partner's illness and death and then unto Allen's recovery as he comes to grips with his loss. I highly recommend this book especially if you are having trouble verbalizing your own thoughts and feelings.
